Although France’s forest area continues to grow, this figure is misleading: the expansion is mainly due to plantations. These are not natural forests but tree fields lacking biodiversity and absorbing far less CO₂. Moreover, such plantations are vulnerable to climate change; trees become increasingly dry, and a single storm can topple them, not to mention pest infestations that kill dozens of hectares of spruce. This investigation lifts the veil on opaque practices within the forestry industry.
