Im Duisburger Hafen wird ein Toter gefunden. Es ist der Binnenschiffer Heinz Petschek. Er wurde erstochen. Dringend der Tat verdächtig erweist sich der Schiffer Jan Poppinga; Petschek hatte mit seiner Frau ein Verhältnis. Kriminalhauptkommissar Horst Schimanski glaubt an Poppingas Unschuld. Es stellt sich heraus, dass Petschek kurz vor seinem Tod seinen langjährigen Arbeitsplatz verlassen und auf dem Schiff des Partikuliers Wittinger angeheuert hatte.
