Der Tierparkinspektor Rolf Bergmann ist bei seinen Mitarbeitern im Hamburger Tierpark Hagenbeck wegen seiner rüden Art sehr unbeliebt. Er wird tot in der Box einer Elefantenkuh aufgefunden, das Tier hat ihn zu Tode getrampelt. Die beiden Hauptkommissare Stoever und Brockmöller ermitteln, dass es sich in diesem Fall nicht um ein tragisches Unglück, sondern um Mord handelt. Ein Elefant als "Mordwerkzeug". Viele Personen im Umfeld des Opfers haben ein Motiv für die Tat: zum Beispiel David Weber, der von Bergmann bei einem Rendezvous mit dessen Tochter Inga überrascht und dabei handgreiflich wurde. Aber auch dessen Vater, der Tierarzt Dr. Heinz Weber, der seine Verlobte Dr. Christine Lohnert an Bergmann verlor. Als Täter kommt auch der Buchhalter Albert Liehr infrage, der Unregelmäßigkeiten in der Kontoführung zu verbergen hat.
