Doppelmord in der Villa des High-Tech-Unternehmers Alfred Küpper. Hauptkommissar Otto Brandenburg wird bei der Identifizierung des ermordeten Paares von dem jüngeren Bruder Helmut unterstützt: Es sind Alfred und seine Frau Hella. Die Haushälterin widerspricht dem und bezeichnet die Frau als Helmuts Ehefrau Sabine. Brandenburg will Helmut Küpper nochmals befragen, aber er ist spurlos verschwunden. Was zunächst wie ein Ehe- und Eifersuchtsdrama aussieht, präsentiert sich in einem völlig anderen Licht, als Brandenburg von einem Raubüberfall auf dem Flughafen München-Riem erfährt. Eine Ladung Mikroprozessoren im Wert von 1,2 Millionen wurde gestohlen und später der Firma wieder angeboten. Alfred Küpper hatte von diesem Vorgang erfahren - wenig später war er tot. Seine Frau Hella war seitdem verschwunden. Dann werden der LKW-Fahrer Bernd Struwe und Steffi Neuhaus, eine enge Freundin von Alfred und Hella Küpper, ermordet. Kriminalhauptkommissar Brandenburg kämpft gegen die Zeit, denn er kennt das nächste Opfer.
