Kommissar von Burg und die Gruppe "Leib und Leben" haben es diesmal mit einem gut getarnten und darum umso gefährlicheren Berner Ableger der "Russen-Mafia" zu tun. Ein Raubüberfall auf ein Waffengeschäft endet trotz von Burgs Anwesenheit tödlich. Auf der Suche nach dem Mörder geraten Philipp von Burg und Markus Gertsch in ein feinmaschiges Netz internationaler Verbindungen, die alle in Smirnows Anwaltskanzlei zusammenlaufen. Auch die russische Übersetzerin Helena Krasnowa, die den beiden Ermittlern zur Seite steht, ist in Smirnows frühere Geschäfte verwickelt. Dies merkt von Burg aber erst, als er sich bereits in Helena verliebt hat. Mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung seines Kollegen Gertsch, aber auch mit überraschender Waffengewandtheit kann von Burg sich und Helena aus der misslichen Situation retten.
