Bei Bauarbeiten an der Bundesstraße zur Wallfahrtskirche von "Maria Gnaden" wird ein Skelett gefunden. Die Münchner Kriminalhauptkommissare Franz Leitmayr und Ivo Batic stehen vor der schier unlösbaren Aufgabe, anhand der Knochenfunde die Umstände seines Todes zu ermitteln. Bei ihren Recherchen stoßen sie auf dem Münchner Viktualienmarkt auf die Schwestern Luise und Bernadette, die dort einen Stand mit Obst und Gemüse führen.
