In der Vorlesung des Mathematik-Professors Simon Kannell bricht eine seiner Studentinnen zusammen. Die Polizei stellt Tod durch Vergiftung fest. Sie entdeckt außerdem einen glühenden Liebesbrief der jungen Frau an den Professor. Die Gruppe "Leib und Leben" der Berliner Polizei mit den Kommissaren von Burg und Gertsch ermittelt in der Drogenszene und an der Universität. Bei einer Buchvernissage des bekannten Chaostheoretikers Kannell informiert von Burg den sehr verwirrt wirkenden Professor über den mysteriösen Tod der Studentin. Nach einem Streit mit seiner Frau verlässt Kannell die Vernissage und begibt sich ins Spielcasino, wo er regelmässig den Gesetzen des Zufalls auf die Spur zu kommen versucht. Er lässt sich auf eine Nacht mit Miriam ein, dem weiblichen Croupier des Casinos. Zurück in seiner Wohnung, muss Kannell feststellen, dass seine Ehefrau verschwunden ist. Er erhält Besuch von Kommissar Burg, und die beiden machen eine schreckliche Entdeckung...
