Morgens um 7.30 Uhr klingelt das Telefon von LKA-Ermittler Felix Murot. Es ist seine Assistentin Magda Wächter, die ihm mitteilt, dass es eine Geiselnahme in einer Bank gibt, und dass er sofort kommen muss. "Wer überfällt denn heute noch eine Bank?", murmelt Murot, und: "Wahrscheinlich wieder ein verzweifelter Amateur." Wächter soll schon einmal alles vorbereiten, das sei ja klassische Polizei-Routine. Waschen, rasieren, anziehen, jeden Morgen die gleiche Prozedur.
Murot fährt zum Tatort, legt sich eine Schutzweste an und begibt sich in die Bank, um den Bankräuber und Geiselnehmer zur Aufgabe zu überreden. Dank gelernter Polizeipsychologie kann er den Geiselnehmer überzeugen, sich zu stellen. Doch im letzten Moment geht irgendetwas schief.
