Beinahe ganz Alt-Bützenich ist verlassen und verrammelt. Nachts schaut hier ein Sicherheitsdienst nach dem Rechten. Es war beschlossene Sache, dass die Häuser und die Kirche dem Tagebau weichen müssen. Dann bringt die Klimawende neue Hoffnung: Das alte Dorf darf bleiben. Als Dr. Christian Franzen (Leopold von Verschuer), der Arzt des Ortes, informiert wird, dass in seinem leerstehenden Haus eingebrochen wurde, macht er sich sofort auf den Weg – kehrt aber nicht mehr nach Hause zurück. Seine Frau Betje (Lou Strenger) wendet sich an die Polizei, die ihren Mann findet – erschossen, im alten Dorf.
