Right before production on Angel's Egg, Mamoru Oshii is widely cited to have lost his faith in Christianity. Given all the religious symbolism in the movie, it's undoubtedly a movie about faith.

According to Absurdist philosophy, there is a fundamental disharmony between the individual's search for meaning, and the meaninglessness of the universe. Three solutions are offered for this problem -

First: A leap of faith. An unproveable belief in a reality beyond this world.

Second, suicide. Escaping a pointless existence.

Third, acceptance of an Absurd existence, and the freedom that comes with creating your own meaning.

In a way, the girl goes through all three of these phases. She believes that something is inside the egg. When it's crushed, she throws herself into a ravine. After throwing herself in, she undergoes a revival - with the girl herself becoming the object of her faith.
