Ils sont 216 000 praticiens, leur nombre a doublé en 30 ans, mais ils sont de plus en plus mal répartis dans le pays. Dans certaines régions, les quelques médecins qui restent sont surchargés de travail, voient leurs salles d'attente bondées, rencontrent des patients râleurs et impatients et effectuent des visites à domicile qui s'étendent parfois sur des centaines de kilomètres ! Conséquence : un nombre croissant de malades non suivis et une dégradation de santé préoccupante pour les personnes ayant renoncé à consulter à cause des distances.
