Many books and paintings in the Thief series are inspired by real world documents, including Captain John Phillips; pirate code and Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer." Additionally, all of Thief III's portraits are members of the IonStorm development team.
Thief was originally a medieval fantasy game called Dark Camelot, based on a reimagined Arthurian mythology where Arthur and Merlin were insane despots. However, the original engine handled breaking and entering better than swordfighting, so the team rebuilt it around stealth.
Viktoria's voice actress also voices SHODAN from the System Shock series, while Benny the Dumb Guard voices XERXES. The latter's role in Thief was alluded to in Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim, where Harold the Tree shared Benny's accent and Mercer Frey was in charge of the Thieves Guild.
