Why Hollywood Dumps Its Worst Movies in January

Every year, as awards season heats up and audiences recover from the holidays, January becomes a cinematic graveyard packed with forgotten sequels, failed franchises, and films studios have already written off.

There are, of course, rare exceptions. Movies like Paddington 2, Cloverfield, and select Oscar contenders expanding into wider releases have proven that January can produce quality cinema. But more often than not, the month has earned its reputation as Hollywood’s infamous “Dump Month.”

So why is that? Why do movie studios release their weakest films at the start of the year? How did January become the go-to dumping ground for risky projects, troubled productions, and box-office disappointments?
