As early as the 19th century, researchers recognized that industrialization could alter the atmosphere and cause temperatures to rise significantly. By the mid-20th century, a growing number of scientists were warning of the unforeseeable environmental consequences of using fossil fuels. The study "The Limits to Growth" and the Stockholm Conference on Environment and Development marked the beginning of an international awareness of this problem.
