One of the running themes that may seem like my channel is based on in regards to analyzing youtubers is, “forget the YouTube rules to growth. Just be yourself, and you’ll be successful”. You see this message in my videos about Shane Dawson and PewDiePie, but thinking this way can be dangerous. Although their success can offer aspiring small youtubers valuable lessons, we have to remember that many have followed in their footsteps and have failed. We often put too much emphasize on studying how someone got to the top, but too little studying people who didn’t make it. This is called survivorship bias. So, despite the fact that many of the biggest creators on YouTube have broken the “focus on a niche” rule, we can’t ignore the fact that many more have broken this rule too and failed. A point even more overlooked is creators who do stick to a niche, but become increasingly demotivated, uncreative, and ultimately unhappy, and in my opinion this is most identified in the creator, Bobby Burns.
