The story about the development of Kirby for the Kirby video game is a story about the ups and downs of Masahiro Sakurai creating Kirby and bringing HAL laboratory 5 Billion Yuan in Debt. Nintendo the video game maker decided to make an investment with HAL laboratory which brought the Kirby character and franchise to success
History About the Creation of Kirby:
The creation of the Kirby video game character as a simple ball-like character was designed to be a placeholder until another character could be created. Created by 19 year old Masahiro Sakurai, Kirby's design was only meant to be a placeholder until another character could be created to be the game's protagonist, but Sakurai eventually believed Kirby was the best fit for the game.
Kirby was named after John Kirby, the American lawyer who successfully defended a young Nintendo company in the landmark legal case Universal City Studios, Inc. vs. Nintendo Co., Ltd. when Nintendo was sued over the similarity of Donkey Kong to Universal's King Kong.
HAL Laboratories designed the boxart for the Kirby titles with a cute depiction of the character but Nintendo of America insisted that packaging in the United States represent a stronger, tougher character to appeal to an American audience.
Characteristics:
Kirby comes from the planet Pop Star where he resides in a home in Cream Land. Kirby was created as a pink, ball-like character with large red feet. His body is flexible which allows him to stretch, turn into different shapes and inhale other objects/characters. Kirby has a very upbeat, cheerful personality whose hobbies include singing. Kirby’s signature move is inhaling enemies and gaining their abilities before spitting them back out. He can also fly by filling himself up with air. However, in Kirby’s Dream Land, Kirby did not have the copy abilities but instead collected power ups to gain different abilities.
