Dan Aykroyd's interest in ghosts was influenced by his own family's belief in the phenomenon. His great grandfather regularly held seances at the family home and his grandfather attempted to build a custom crystal radio to contact the spirit world.
Eddie Murphy was originally intended to play the Ghostbusters' first new hire, Winston Zeddemore, but had to decline to work on Beverly Hills Cop and the role went to Ernie Hudson. Pee-wee Herman actor Paul Reubens was also intended to play Gozer, but turned the role down to make Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
To market the film, Reitman re-edited the Ghostbusters commercial from the film to include an actual hotline phone number. Callers would be treated to a message from Aykroyd and Murray in character saying they were too busy catching ghosts to answer the phone.
Shots of the Ghostbusters running through the streets of New York were shot without permits. In one shot, the crew is actually running from a security guard who can be seen in the background in pursuit of the actors.
The Ectomobile was originally painted black, but the color did not read well when the vehicle was shot for night scenes, so the car was repainted white. The Ecto-1 is also in the 2016 film, but as the original was a 1959 Cadillac ambulance, the reboot version is a 1984 Cadillac hearse, which is also repainted from black to white, and is from the same year the original Ghostbusters movie was released.
