Transcript:

Back in 1998 at Hal Laboratory, a second-party developer for Nintendo, Masahiro Sakurai started toying around with the idea for a four player fighting game. The title originally used simple base characters and was called "Dragon King: The Fighting Game". Sakurai then enlisted the help of a fellow co-worker, Satoru Iwata, the future president of Nintendo.

Together they worked on Dragon King -- Sakurai handled the design, modeling, and movement while Iwata took on the programming. But they knew that fighting games didn’t sell well, so they incorporated Nintendo characters to help make the game original, all without official sanction from Nintendo. When the game was finally playable, the prototype was shown to their bosses with Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus, and Fox as playable characters, and the game was green lit for production with the new title, Smash Bros.

Smash Bros was not expected to do well financially and was planned to be released only in Japan with little marketing. It wasn't until after the game was a huge commercial success that it saw a worldwide release. Smash Bros has gone on to release three sequels, developed across multiple studios and pioneering revolutionary practices such as teasing development photos in weekly updates and creating a fighting mechanic known as "tripping.”

Have fun!
