Taïwan : l’île assiégée par le géant chinois
Territoire insulaire, situé au large de la Chine, Taïwan (23 millions d’habitants) a un statut unique au monde. Ni un vrai pays indépendant, ni une province chinoise, l’île vit de façon totalement autonome. Elle a son propre gouvernement, son armée, son économie, sa diplomatie, sa monnaie…
Contrairement à la Chine, dont l’objectif est de placer l’île sous son autorité, la presse, les réseaux sociaux, les élections et les religions sont libres à Taïwan. La présidente est une femme, élue démocratiquement. C’est le seul « pays » d’Asie où le mariage gay est légal, le seul gouvernement du monde avec un ministre transgenre, le seul parlement avec un député rocker. Et à Taïwan, le droit de manifester est acquis. En bref, une démocratie moderne et avancée, mais aussi très menacée : « l’endroit le plus dangereux du monde » selon le magazine britannique The Economist.

The series starts powerfully with episode 1 focusing on the right-wing populist 'Party for Freedom' (PVV) which could become the strongest force in the Dutch elections held on March 15, 2017. It portrays how this development becomes a nightmare for migrants and Muslims in the country, demonstrating how rigid positions in this once liberal flagship democracy are. The high-emotional election campaign is shown to change society significantly.
Moving further into Eastern Europe, episode 2 sheds light on Poland's growing fear of Russian invasion since the Ukraine crisis. It shows tens of thousands of men and women trading their everyday outfits for olive-green combat attire to train for defending their homeland. Even Polish education is seen embracing militarization trends with over 30,000 students attending uniform classes where they receive military training using real weapons.
