Der Schauspieler Jens Briener träumt von Berlin, von großen Rollen und Erfolg. An seinen bisherigen Mißerfolgen sind für ihn immer die jeweiligen Regisseure und Kollegen schuld. Seine Frau droht ihm mit Scheidung, wenn er geht. Doch Briener setzt alles auf eine Karte, nimmt die Scheidung in Kauf und versucht sein Glück in Berlin. Er macht diese und jene Gelegenheitsarbeit, läuft unermüdlich zum Besetzungsbüro des Fernsehens, nur besetzt wird er nicht.
Durch einen Zufall entdeckt er für sich eine andere Möglichkeit, sein schauspielerisches Talent zu nutzen. Und da es funktioniert, gelingt es ihm, die unterschiedlichsten Menschen zu täuschen. Briener betrügt und stiehlt weiter. Doch was mit kleinen harmlosen Klauereien beginnt, steigert sich bis zum schweren Betrug und gefährlicher Körperverletzung. Und da Briener nicht besonders intelligent vorgeht, hat er sich bald hoffnungslos in Lügen und Betrügereien verstrickt, aus denen es für ihn keinen Ausweg mehr gibt.
