Während des jährlichen Ballabends in der Seniorenresidenz "Goldener Herbst" bricht beim Tanz plötzlich die Ballkönigin zusammen. Sie ist sofort tot. Gestorben an einer Überdosis Morphium.
Die Kommissare ermitteln in der Residenz. Der Täter muss unter den Gästen des Balls sein. Die Spur führt vom Stylisten Joel Meinhardt über den Haus-meister Markus Meiser, die Residenzärztin Dr. Schuhmann, die Mitbewohnerin Veronika Berger, bis hin zum Liebhaber.
Kommissar Theo Renner stellt fest, dass er den Liebhaber der Toten, Roland Schelling, kennt: Er war Verdächtiger in seinem ersten Fall vor 25 Jahren. Renner war sich sicher, dass er schuldig ist, konnte ihm die Tat aber letztlich nicht nachweisen. Schelling beteuert seine Unschuld in beiden Fällen, aber Renner ist skeptisch.
