Aufruhr in der kleinen Gemeinde Penzweiler bei Köln. Die Gemeindemitarbeiterin Maria Küppers wird tot aufgefunden. Sie wurde im Garten des Pfarrhauses mit einem Stein erschlagen.
Die "heilige Maria" war allseits beliebt. Doch Maria lebte unter falscher Identität. Wollte sie sich vor ihrem Mann Herbert Schulz verstecken? Dieser wurde nach dem Diebstahl von 30 000 Euro verurteilt. Die Haft endete kurz vor ihrem Tod, und Herbert spürte sie auf.
Die SOKO vermutet, dass Maria die Beute an sich genommen hat und Herbert nun versuchte, an das Geld zu kommen. Doch auch Marias Privatleben steckte voller Geheimnisse. Die Ermittler erfahren, dass die Tote schwanger war. Die Suche nach dem Vater beginnt. Dabei entdecken sie, dass das Opfer zuvor 5000 Euro erhalten hatte.
