Am Stadtrand wird ein ausgebrannter Transporter mit einer männlichen Leiche gefunden. Schnell ermitteln Nina Rubin und Robert Karow, dass drei weitere, ältere Fälle mit ähnlichem Tathergang nie aufgeklärt wurden. Der Verdacht auf einen Serienmörder liegt nahe. Eine weitere Gemeinsamkeit der Fälle besteht darin, dass alle Opfer mithilfe einer In-vitro-Fertilisation in einer Kinderwunsch-Klinik in Berlin-Wannsee gezeugt wurden. Deren Geschäftsführerin Dr. Irene Wohlleben und ihre Laborchefin und Lebenspartnerin Hanneke Tietzsche führen die Klinik allerdings schon länger nicht mehr – das hat stattdessen Irenes Sohn Dr. Stefan Wohlleben übernommen, der in den 80er Jahren als eines der ersten Retortenbabys Deutschlands zur Welt kam. Bei ihren Ermittlungen stoßen die Kommissare auf einen Mann namens Harbinger, der vor Jahren einen Anschlag auf Irene Wohlleben verübte und nun einen Schlüsseldienst in einer Berliner U-Bahn Station betreibt.
