Y: Marshals follows Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, as he joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in Montana. The premise is sharp because it doesn’t simply repeat the ranch warfare of Yellowstone; it repositions Kayce as a man trying to use the skills that shaped him—cowboy instinct, Navy SEAL discipline and Dutton-family survival reflexes—in a more official, and often more psychologically punishing, arena. The result is a modern Western procedural with a serialized backbone: every case has immediate danger, but every bullet fired also echoes through family, land, tribal politics and the cost of trying to keep order in a region where violence is rarely random.
If you watched Season 1 and have been away for a while, here’s what you need to remember without getting lost in a full recap: Kayce has left the Yellowstone Ranch behind, at least geographically and professionally, but not emotionally. The show’s first 13 episodes established him as part of a U.S. Marshals team tasked with facing Montana’s escalating violence, while also carrying the old Dutton burden of family first, consequences later. Around him, the series built a strong ensemble: Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, Arielle Kebbel as Belle Skinner, Ash Santos as Andrea Cruz, and returning Yellowstone-world figures such as Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater, Mo Brings Plenty as Mo, and Brecken Merrill as Tate Dutton. Season 2 appears ready to test every one of those relationships.
