Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a farmer and Viking warrior who longs to plunder the supposed riches of unknown England, and his brother Rollo (Clive Standen) fight relentlessly against the Baltic peoples. After victory, Ragnar has visions of the god Odin and his Valkyries.
Ragnar travels to Kattegat to attend the Thing, the rite of passage to adulthood for his son Björn.
Ragnar's wife, Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), fends off two assailants who try to rape her. In Kattegat, Ragnar convinces Rollo that raids to the west hold more promise for loot than traditional attacks on Baltic populations.
His clan leader, Earl Haraldson, does not believe in the presence of land in the west and wants to continue his raids to the east.
Björn and Ragnar secretly set about building a ship. While Ragnar recruits men, his brother Rollo makes unwelcome advances to Lagertha. With the ship ready, Ragnar sets sail west into the unknown, while Earl Haraldson, tipped off by a traitor, begins to take revenge on those who helped Ragnar mount his expedition.
