TRANSCRIPT:
In 1986, five brothers founded Ubisoft, a video game publishing company, in Paris . Ubisoft distributed games from Electronic Arts, Sierra On-Line, and Microprose in France, but the company grew beyond French borders and into the rest of Europe. However, their conquest was far from over -- the Guillemot brothers set their sights on the biggest video game market in the world: North America.

Ubisoft established their first North American studio in the French-speaking province of Quebec, dubbing it Ubisoft Montreal. The newly minted studio initially developed forgettable children's games, but the studio shifted into high gear when Ubisoft acquired the rights to the Tom Clancy brand in 2000. Even then, Ubisoft Montreal was still a young studio that had yet to ship a triple-A title -- but they were ambitious and knew what they wanted to create from the get go: a graphically impressive and realistic stealth game that could compete with the likes of Thief and Metal Gear Solid.

Ubisoft Montreal set out to create a game that revolved around a hero that stalked from the shadows. The problem was that the technology didn't exist... at least not yet. The studio developed a dynamic lighting system that allowed for our hero sneak in real-time shadows with his signature tri-focal goggles... and thus, Splinter Cell was born. Sam Fisher instantly became an iconic video game hero and placed Ubisoft Montreal firmly on the map. Now, more than a decade later, Sam Fisher is still sneaking into hearts and minds everywhere.
