Including guest characters, Final Fantasy VI has 28 playable characters, 14 of which are permanent. This is one of the largest playable casts in a Square-Enix game with the exception of Chrono Cross, which had 44.

Many party members from Final Fantasy VI appear as spectators during the gladiator boss battle in Square's Secret of Evermore. Though obscured by the light, Locke, Mog, Relm, Strago, Terra, and Umaro can all be seen in the stands just north of the flaming death pit.

In August 1995, a 3D tech demo of Final Fantasy VI was unveiled at the SIGGRAPH computer graphics convention in Los Angeles. Featuring Locke, Terra, and Shadow, the game was assumed to be an N64 remake, but was really a test of the Final Fantasy VII engine.
