In 1985, MIT graduate Christopher Weaver created a small video game company in Betheseda, Maryland. Their first game was Gridiron! for the Atari and Commodore systems. While the sprites looked like Connect Four discs, Gridiron! was the first of its kind to simulate the physics of real-life sports, which laid the groundwork for EA's John Madden Football.

By the 90's, Bethesda had developed a wide array of titles involving Wayne Gretzky, the Terminator, and Where's Waldo. In 1994, they released the first game of what would be their best known series, The Elder Scrolls: Arena, an open-world action RPG that embraced the principle of "being who you want and doing what you want" like no other game before it. Despite modest reviews, the game had enough of a following to garner a sequel, Daggerfall.

In 2001, Bethesda Game Studios was established to develop the occasional racing game...but mainly the Elder Scrolls franchise. The world of Tamriel would grow in sophistication of both gameplay and story with each installment, including Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. During this time, Bethesda took over the rights of the Fallout series, solidifying themselves as the premiere developer for unprecedented, open-world gaming from the Capital Wasteland to Oblivion.
