Transcript:

In 1991, fresh UCLA graduates Michael Morhaime, Allen Adham, and Frank Pearce established Silicon & Synapse and began developing ports for other studios. They released their first game, RPM Racing and continued with The Lost Vikings and Rock N' Roll Racing.

Despite accolades, the small company was funding paychecks via personal credit cards and the name Silicon & Synapse was constantly misinterpreted. They became Chaos Studios and accepted an offer from Davidson & Associates of Math Blaster fame for funding, distribution, and the development freedom the co-founders had longed for.

When the Chaos Studios moniker was already taken, they leafed through the dictionary and chose Blizzard Entertainment before releasing Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. Although only a moderate critical and commercial success, WarCraft brought Blizzard financial stability, allowing it to take a chance on a small studio with a big idea.

Condor, in dire financial straits, approached Blizzard with their dream of battling the Lords of Hell and was promptly purchased and renamed Blizzard North. In 1996, Diablo launched to critical acclaim, but it was Battle.net, the first online gaming service built directly into a game, that shook up the industry. With Battle.net, players could simply click a button and be hacking and slashing away with a buddy -- revolutionary in an era when you needed an IP address to connect to anyone. Battle.net quickly became the premier online gaming service, paving the way for Starcraft, World of Warcraft, and now Hearthstone.
