At some point between making the combined GDP of most countries on Earth and deciding the plant explosives in the Real Money Auction House, Activision-Blizzard sat atop it's mighty skull-throne and thought, "We should really get into the casual market." And so it summoned Team 5 to work exclusively on creating a cohesive, accessible experience for both casual and hardcore players to embrace in a way that ruined marriages and occasionally bank accounts.

Work began on a prototype for a casual game called Hearthstone, but was briefly derailed when thirteen members of Team 5 were temporarily moved around to shore up other games in development - leaving only two to create pen-and-paper prototypes by themselves and test them on each other. After numerous iterations of physical card and board games, most of which were, by the team's own admission, 'Terrible,' the version we know and love was stumbled upon and Team 5 was reunited along with six additional programmers, bringing the entire group up to 21.

Closed beta was announced in August 2013, and card rebalancing and server tweaks drove further development until open beta hit the following January, which saw an instant subscriber base in the millions. Now Hearthstone is adding an adventure mode and event quests, further sealing the fate of card collectors everywhere and cementing Team 5's status as the Seal Team 6 of game development.
