About Evolve:

Evolve is a first-person shooter video game published by 2K Games, developed by Turtle Rock Studios and distributed by Take-Two Interactive. The game was launched on February 10, 2015 on Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Backstory:

Evolve takes place on a distant planet in the “Far Arm” of space known as Shear. The colonies on Shear are attacked by alien Monsters. A former planet tamer named William Cabot is brought in order to evacuate the colonists and fight the Monsters. Cabot builds a team of Hunters to kill the Monsters.

Gameplay:

Evolve is a multiplayer game where four player controlled Hunters fight against a fight player controlling one alien Monster. The four human characters must kill the Monster while the Monster must kill all four Hunters or complete another objective such as destroying a base. Hunters and Monsters have unique abilities to use in battle and can gain power-ups by killing the local wildlife. There are four classes in the Hunters’ team which include: a trapper, a support, a medic, and an assault class. The Monster player can also choose from four classes which include: Goliath, Kraken, Wraith and Behemoth.

There are four different game modes which include:

Hunt - The Monster must get to stage three to destroy the power relay on the map before the Hunters kill him. The Monster can also kill all the Hunters to win.

Nest - Where the Monster has Six Monster eggs at random locations on the map that it must protect for 18 minutes from the Hunters.

Rescue - The Hunters must locate and revive injured colonists and help them escape. The Monster must stop the Hunters from reviving the colonists. Whichever side either saves or kills five colonists will win.

Defend - The Hunters must save the starship while it’s refueling. The Monster must destroy the power generators.

In all game modes, Evolve has Quick Play where players can play just one match or Evacuation which is a five-match story mode.

Development:

In May 2011, THQ acquired the publishing rights to Evolve from Turtle Rock Studios. After filing for bankruptcy in December 2012, Take-Two Interactive purchased the publishing rights to Evolve for $10.8 Million. At E32014, 2k Games made many announcements about the gameplay and characters in Evolve. Evolve launched on February 10, 2015 after some delays and beta and alpha testing.

Reviews and Rewards:

-IGN gave the game a 9/10 with a review from Vince Ingenito citing it’s thrilling and tactical gameplay, unique concept and strong AI.
-Kevin VanOrd from GameSpot gave Evolve an 8/10 also giving praise to the AI elements in Evolve
-Evolve launched No. 1 in UK software-sales chart

Transcript:

When THQ went bankrupt and its assets were auctioned off, Turtle Rock Studios put in a bid with every penny they had as a fail-safe bid in case no publishers bought Evolve. They knew they had a great game and after years of work, they were willing to risk it all to ensure its release.

Evolve existed before Left 4 Dead, but hardware limitations prevented the devs from creating the game. The devs wanted the monsters to be able to hide from and stalk the hunters using the environment, but the technology at the time couldn’t render the lush alien habitats that this game mechanic demanded. Fortunately, Left 4 Dead’s Tank encounters encouraged Turtle Rock to revisit the concept.

The original game design for Evolve had the Monster characters controlled with a First Person perspective, but Turtle Rock changed this to third person so the player could see the scale and growth of the monster as it evolves.
