Way back in the 90's, British game designer Julian Gollop shopped around a sequel to his tactical shooter, Laser Squad. Gollop landed with Civilization publisher MicroProse, but MicroProse wanted something more ambitious, which at that time pretty much meant ALIENS, and that’s when they landed on a PC title about UFOs.

Inspired by Bob Lazar's book on recovering alien tech at Area 51 and the UFO TV series, Gollop designed a mix of resource development and turn-based strategy into UFO: Enemy Unknown, but with only a four person team and no PC programming experience, their 18 month deadline passed quickly. Shareholder Spectrum Holobyte called for cancellation but Microprose simply chose to ignore them and never told Gollop, so his team continued to work on what was supposed to be a scrapped game. Secretly in development for 30 months, Spectrum Holobyte had no choice but to release the finished game.

UFO: Enemy Unknown -- or XCOM in North America -- was a surprising hit, spawning four sequels but the franchise was then acquired by Hasbro. Hasbro's only XCOM title, Enforcer, was regarded as one of the worst spinoffs ever. XCOM bounced around for years in sales and mergers before landing at Firaxis Games. Long-time fan, Jake Solomon spearheaded his dream remake, but the dated combat system made a faithful remake difficult. After years of work, 2012's XCOM: Enemy Unknown released to critical acclaim, with XCOM 2 following in 2016. So cowboy up and experience some permadeath in one of the greatest franchises ever.
