LORE - Chrono Trigger Lore in a Minute!

In the year 65,000,000 B.C., a mysterious gem known as the Dreamstone accelerates the evolution of lifeforms on Earth, producing 2 sentient species: Reptites and humans. They fought for centuries until a massive alien parasite known as Lavos crash-lands on the planet and ushers in the Ice Age, annihilating the Reptites and forcing humans underground.

Lavos lies dormant for millions of years, influencing and cultivating Earth and its lifeforms in order to harvest its energy and produce genetically enhanced spawns of itself to repeat this cycle on other planets. Lavos would reap the planet's energy until the Day of Lavos in 1999 A.D., when it erupted from the Earth and rained apocalypse down on human civilization.


But in the year 1000 A.D. when Princess Marle volunteers to demonstrate a teleportation device made by an inventor, Lucca, her magical pendant reacts and creates a time portal. Crono bravely follows Marle to the year 600 A.D. rescuing her and restoring the timeline, but is sentenced to death back home for kidnapping the princess. To escape his execution, the three haphazardly create another portal, this time arriving in 2300 A.D. to a post-apocalyptic Earth where they witness a video-recording of the Day of Lavos. Vowing to save the Earth, they time-travel together with a cavewoman, a robot, a demon king, a large frog with sword and set out to defeat Lavos!
