The original title for Resident Evil was Biohazard in Japan, but a different game and even a Heavy Metal band already had the name in the U.S. making it difficult to trademark. The name Resident Evil was then chosen in a company-wide contest because marketing thought it was a clever pun. Really.

Resident Evil was originally intended to be a remake of a Famicom RPG called Sweet Home, based on a Japanese horror film of the same name. In fact, the game's zombies were originally written as ghosts, but creator Shinji Mikami looked to George Romero's films for more gritty, tangible antagonists.

The orchestral soundtrack for Resident Evil: Director's Cut Dual Shock Version was credited to deaf Japanese composer Mamoru Samuragochi, but a journalist from Aera magazine noticed his reaction to a doorbell during an interview. It has since come to light that the composer is not only fully capable of hearing, but also had his work ghostwritten by Takashi Niigaki.

You don't have to be the master of unlocking to know that the first Resident Evil game had terrible dialog. Guinness World Records even recognized it in 2008 as the Worst Game Dialogue Ever. Despite all the great things Resident Evil has done over the years, it will never recover from the Jill Sandwich.

Resident Evil 4 was originally intended by writer Noboru Sugimura to take place in a gothic setting featuring cool and stylish action but Mikami thought the concepts strayed too far from the Resident Evil series. Instead, the story and visuals were reworked into a world of demons for a new franchise, Devil May Cry.
