Transcript:

This is the first Mario game developed and published by a company other than Nintendo… technically. While Ubisoft Paris will get the official credit from Nintendo, there were several Mario titles in the 80s and 90s that Nintendo had no involvement in other than licensing the IP, and thus are not officially recognized. Some of the titles include Hudson Soft’s 1984 Mario Bros. Special and Philips’ 1994 Hotel Mario.

In the brainstorming phase of development at Ubisoft, five designers generated 13 ideas over a 2 and half-week period. Before settling on a tactical game, Ubisoft was strongly considering making a MOBA or a real-time strategy game.

When the game was first “leaked,” the robot rabbid companion named Beep-O, was called Tuttorio. The character is an ally for the player and guides you through the levels, so Tuttorio might have been a HARE on the nose. Due to the character’s appearance he’s been given the nickname, Roomba.

Ubisoft has taken Luigi's infamous death stare from Mario Kart 8 and turned it into a special technique of his called "Steely Stare". Each playable character will have two techniques, a primary and secondary.

Ubisoft has had the idea to do a Rabbids/Mario crossover since as far back as 2010 during the Wii U era. Early concept ideas included an adventure game that had the Rabbids infiltrating the Mario world. There was even concept art that featured Mario chasing after some Rabbids, who had apparently stolen Bowser from the Mushroom Kingdom. At the time Nintendo was reluctant to give out the Mario IP and Ubisoft never formally pitched the idea.
