Bridgerton is one of Netflix's most successful intellectual properties, so we are getting a spin-off about the younger years of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Sterlitz. Who was played on the flagship series by Guyanese-British lesbian actor Golda Rosheuvel and the younger version will be played by India Amarteifio.
As a tie-in, Julia Quinn (and Shonda Rhimes) have penned a prequel series titled "Queen Charlotte" about the monarch and the tragic love story between herself and George III.
While I overall support the efforts of bringing people of color into period dramas—mainly because they are a significant part of Western European media and therefore, I want talented actors of color to be included. The particular expansion of Charlotte makes me feel a bit uncomfortable because once you get past a certain period with the British Royal Family—or any royal family—slavery becomes a reality. Let's talk about it.
