In preparation for the EU4 Grandest LAN, I started an Ironman Castille game for practice. I ended having so much fun, I took it all the way to the end in 1821. My goal was to obtain the "Forever Golden" achievement by completing the entire Spanish mission tree, which required several large colonial nations in the New World and huge conquests in Europe. In the last fifty years, I decided to also turn this into a "Mare Nostrum" run by forming the Roman Empire and owning the entire Mediterranean coast.
I also wanted to relearn how to form a trade empire in this game. I learned that I've been grossly underestimating the value of developed trade companies. They can extract massive fortunes out of Africa and Asia and - together with colonial nations - allow you to absolutely dominate the trade game. I ended the game the richest I've ever been, sitting on the maximum bank value of one million ducats and nothing to spend it on.
Solid game, very fun. It's nice not worrying about world conquest.
