Season 3 of NCIS: Origins premieres in just eight days, on October 6, 2026, on Paramount+, and the new chapter is shaping up to be one of the most personal entries yet in the NCIS universe. The prequel drama has always had a powerful hook: long before the legendary agent fans met in NCIS, Leroy Jethro Gibbs was a young special agent learning how to survive, lead, and carry loss inside the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office. But Season 3 is not simply returning to the past. According to the first episode summaries, the new season will split its tension between 1992 and the present day, where ghosts from Gibbs’ history finally shatter his peaceful retirement in Alaska.
For lapsed viewers, here is what you need to remember before the premiere without doing a full rewatch. NCIS: Origins is set in the early 1990s and follows Austin Stowell as the younger Gibbs, years before Mark Harmon’s version becomes the stoic, rule-driven presence at the center of NCIS. Gibbs is part of a gritty, imperfect, often unpredictable team led by Kyle Schmid’s Mike Franks, the NCIS legend whose methods and instincts help shape the agent Gibbs will become. The show’s strength has been its mix of case-of-the-week crime storytelling, military investigation, character trauma, and the slow burn of a man being forged by grief, loyalty, and hard choices.
The biggest reason to be excited this week is the Season 3 premiere’s double impact. In 1992, the team races to rescue Randy, played by Caleb Foote, after he is kidnapped. That immediately places one of the office’s most likable agents in real danger and gives the entire team a high-stakes mission from the opening hour. At the same time, Gibbs and Lala Dominguez must deal with the aftermath of their kiss, which means Season 3 is not backing away from the emotional complications that have been building between Austin Stowell’s Gibbs and Mariel Molino’s Lala. For a series built on the question of how Gibbs became Gibbs, those personal choices matter just as much as the investigations.
