Why American adaptations of Japanese anime will ALWAYS be terrible
The idea of having a live action Hollywood version of anime like Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, etc, always sounds good in theory.
But, as we've seen several times now.. it just isn't going to work.
Why?
I'm sure there are a lot of theories and reasons, but a big one I wanted to touch on in this video was the fact the, fundamentally speaking, the way the west and the east, typically, tell their stories
is very different.
So, when trying to translate them back and forth, there is something, or sometimes like Death Note, everything, lost.
The east approaches their main characters similar to myths, whereas, especially recently, the west focuses on the underdog having to overcome an impossible obstacle.
Also, the focus on external vs internal is a big difference I noticed. Anime usually, though not always, have something personal that the main character is going through. In the west, usually but not always, the external struggle IS the story, with personal
stuff just kind of tacked on for good measure.
As I said, of course there are exceptions to west/vs east in storytelling. But, if you look at the general trends, more of then than not they fit into the categories I mentioned.
