Arrested for the robbery of a bank, Michael Scofield, a civil engineer, is sentenced to five years in prison. To the astonishment and incomprehension of his lawyer friend Veronica, Michael refuses to defend himself in order to lighten his sentence; he only asks the judge in charge of his trial to be incarcerated near his home and obtains the right to be sent to Fox River, a level 1 state prison. He meets Brad Bellick, the security captain who is anything but gentle. His cellmate is Sucre, a young Puerto Rican who wants to find his fiancée as soon as possible.
While there, Michael tries to make contact with a certain Lincoln Burrows, who is none other than his brother. Sentenced to death for having murdered the brother of the Vice President, Lincoln claims his innocence despite the evidence accumulated against him. Michael needs to get close to his brother and goes to see Abruzzi, who is in charge of the neighborhood where Lincoln is. Using his influence, Michael is able to win over Abruzzi.
Convinced that his brother is not guilty, Michael asks Veronica to find out who is behind the case and tells his brother that he has a plan to escape...
Pretending to be a diabetic, Michael often goes to the infirmary where he meets Sara Tancredi, the only doctor. She seems to be troubled by the young man and trust begins to grow. Michael will also influence the prison warden, Henry Pope.
As Bishop McMorrow tries to delay Lincoln's death sentence, he is visited by the Secret Service. Paul Kellerman and Daniel Hale are two agents with brutal and suspicious methods. McMorrow is shot and Veronica begins to suspect that Burrows may be framed.
