Every summer, the Conklin family, Isabel "Belly", her brother Steven and her mother Laurel, go to the home of Susannah, a family friend in Cousins Beach. Susannah has two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah.

Belly has always had a crush on Conrad since he was 12. But he sees her as a little sister.

This summer, they have grown up quite a bit. They don't look like children anymore. The teenage years are here and the first love feelings are felt. Conrad even seems a little distant, almost unbearable in Belly's eyes.

They are all invited to a party on the beach. Belly wants to try to get closer to Conrad. During the party, she runs into him and sees that Conrad is seeing a girl, Nicole. Belly can't stand him. She gets close to Cam, a boy she met at the party. They start dating.

Conrad feels that Belly may not be the little sister he once knew. The debutante ball is coming up and Belly learns that Nicole will be her "sister", her reference for the event.
