Transcript:

In 1997, undergrad Minh "Gooseman" Le broke into modding with his humble Quake mod, Navy SEALS, and A-Team's Action Quake 2, but Le longed for realism.

Then Valve released Half-Life. With its skeletal animation and realistic setting, Le eagerly developed his stripped-down mod, Counter Strike. The slower-paced combat and team strategy attracted players but level design was not Le's forte. So former Action Quake community liaison, Jess Cliffe offered help. Wrangling user-created maps and player discussion, Cliffe helped Le update according to community feedback. Together, they approved hundreds of fixes and introduced dozens of maps over several versions in true crowd development.

But graduation and real-life approached, and Le decided he needed to turn his hobby into a career and he sold Counter-Strike to Valve. The duo continued updating but by version 1.6 the community resisted change, so instead Valve commissioned a sequel. Fans waited for Condition Zero, but it bounced between four developers, then released to mixed reviews. This time, Valve hired Le to remake Counter Strike using its Source engine. Source played well, but Valve was heavily criticized for ignoring its community and Counter-Strike’s popularity took a hit as gamers strayed to other titles.

In 2012, Counter Strike: Global Operations again released to mixed reviews, but this time, Valve listened. They addressed community feedback with strong post-launch support and even million dollar tournaments. With attentive development and an active community, Counter Strike has returned as the benchmark in competitive gaming.

Have fun!
