The Megami Tensei or MegaTen franchise was born fully loaded with demons and dungeon crawling in 1987; their initial game based off the first novel of the series Digital Devil Story. Atlus wanted to develop an RPG that was compelling like the Shin Megami Tensei series, but with less difficult gameplay so as to appeal to a mass audience. They introduced Personas, inspired by the Jungian psychology concept of the mask an individual puts between the self and the world, and set the game in a contemporary high school rather than the medieval or fantasy setting typical of 1990's RPGs.
Atlus Japan developed the game, but the small team at Atlus USA, who still lacked a flagship franchise, was left to translate the massive amount of text to English and make a game full of Japanese culture references relatable to an American audience, so they worked to alter references to Japan, include more western sounding names and diversify the cast.
They also changed the title to Revelations:Persona, apparently overlooking the biblical reference, spawning uproar and devil worshiping accusations due to the demon-looking character on the front of the box, but officials claimed they just thought "Revelations" sounded cool. Nevertheless, the 1996 release of Revelations:Persona became a cult hit, establishing Persona's place in the RPG market and paving the way for all the future Persona games, remakes and demon battles to come.
