The prestigious group of indie developers known as Yacht Club Games was founded in 2011 by Sean Velasco and several crew members from WayForward Games who had previously worked on titles on Contra 4 and A Boy And His Blob.
Yacht Club's first (and so far only) title is the wildly successful Kickstarter title Shovel Knight which drew inspiration from retro titles such as Castlevania, Mega Man, and Ducktales (which was coincidentally remade by their former studio). Shovel Knight launched on the crowd-funding site in March 2013, more than quadrupling its goal of $75,000 a month later. Surprisingly breaking crowdfunding tradition, this Kickstarted game would actually be finished.
To market their debut project, the studio smartly reached out to gaming personalities such as Penny Arcade, Two Best Friends Play, and The Game Grumps, who all promoted the project with glowing recommendations.
Thanks to the extensive crowdfunding, Yacht Club has been able to continually expand the scope of their project, adding in features like a four-player battle mode, a gender-swap story mode, and story campaigns for boss characters. No word yet if the studio actually owns a yacht.
