Founded in 1994 by Ted Price as an independent studio, Insomniac Games emerged as a prominent developer for the PS1. Although their first game Disruptor was a first person shooter skewed towards a more mature audience, Insomniac gained widespread recognition with the more kid friendly Spyro series.
Originally released in 1998 on the PS1 Insomniac helmed the first three installments of the lovable purple dragon. Insomniac further cemented themselves as a major playstation developer with the release of Ratchet & Clank in 2002. Combining tight platforming with an absurd cast of characters and an even more absurd arsenal of weapons, Ratchet & Clank was a huge hit for Insomniac spawning numerous sequels.
As technology evolved with the next console cycle so did Insomniac. Their next franchise was Resistance, a trilogy of first person shooters taking place in an alternate history where aliens have invaded earth -- a departure from the usual family-friendly games Insomniac was known for.
Now, Insomniac is unleashing their next original IP, Sunset Overdrive -- an open-world shooter where energy drinks have mutated the human population. Oh, and they’re making a Ratchet and Clank movie, too.
