In the midst of the totally not awful spiritual renaissance of high school, fledgling illustrator Alex Ahad sketched a number of stray character designs that he one day hoped would be used in a fighting game. This would remain a pipe dream until Ahad met Alex 'Z' Zaimont, a tournament fighting game player who had been coincidentally coding a custom engine since 1999. The two partnered in 2008 on what would later become known as Skullgirls.

By 2010 the team had been picked up by Reverge Labs and Autumn Games, leading to a successful release the same year and a deal with Konami to publish on other platforms -- until Autumn Games was hit by a series of lawsuits related to Def Jam Rapstar, leading to the entire Skullgirls team getting laid off. Reforming under Lab Zero games and obtaining funding through a hugely successful Indiegogo campaign, Skullgirls was revitalized with new characters, new palettes, new soundtracks, and a whole new series of patches -- patches which weren't coming out on time because Konami was dragging its feet.

The partnership between Autumn and Konami was officially terminated in 2013, but in a final gotcha! moment from beyond the grave, Konami had console versions of Skullgirls pulled from the XBLA and PSN marketplaces, forcing Lab Zero to relaunch the title as Skullgirls Encore. Fortunately the game survived, and now we all get to beat each other up as ninja nurses and cartoon robots without the evil influence of a major publisher.
